Do What You Love.

I'm going to go on a little bit of a RANT. Kind of. I've been having a lot of convos involving dreams, goals, working, and people lately. Why does it seem to me like we're in a sea of apathy? Why does everyone have something to complain about, but at the same time they're fine with being completely complacent? Why do people settle; in relationships, careers, and life? Is it because they're scared? NEVER BE SCARED TO DO WHAT YOU LOVE. TAKE RISKS. Someone said "It's rare that people get to do what they want, even though it shouldn't be" and how true that statement is. Instead of doing nothing, I want people to do something. Chase your dreams. Come up with new goals. Something is better than nothing. I'm not happy with where I am, but I'm not giving up. I'm not letting apathy get the best of me. I am making art on the daily. I am working on getting my illustration act together and I'm going to do something with it in the next month or two. I am constantly asked the ever-so-pretentious "Well, what are you going to do with THAT degree?" question. Well, what am I NOT going to do with it? I can do anything I want. Someone I know was telling me that their 19 year old self that dreamt of going into film/media studies would look at the person that they are today and be disappointed. You know why? Because that person isn't following their dream. Whatever you want to do or choose as a career is never unrealistic. It isn't impossible; contrary to what most everyone will tell you. Everyone has an opinion about everyone else and if people stopped caring a little less about others and a little more about themselves, we'd be a much better place because of it. Confucius said: " Wherever you go, go with all your heart". I think that's a great quote to live by. If you're going to have anything, have heart. Make the most of your life; it's the only one you've got. All of the cheesiness aside, grab life by the balls, tell it who the boss is, and DO SOMETHING.

Amen.

There's really nothing I can add. I fully agree with what you have written here.

UUURGH! TOO TRUE!
I think it's really fear of the unknown, though, because all that people are scared of USUALLY (I think) springs from a great deal of misinformation. For example, things along the lines of "What are you going to do with THAT degree?", "Artists don't make any money." and the also very condescending, "You'll understand (why I didn't follow my dreams) when you grow up..." And they are all part of an attitude of which I am, quite frankly, SICK!). I don't think anyone has the right to complain if they are going to settle for less. YES, risks can be frightening, but being happy to be in limbo is even more terrifying to me! It's like being happy with mediocre when I can see remarkable right in front of me! UGH!!! I could rant up a storm with you on this! But I'm sure you're getting tired of my already essay-like comments by now! lol;; (sorry about that!! It's just how I write... lol).
But I'll just leave you with this: I think you should read "Small is the New Big" by Seth Godin. It's an enjoyable read with lots of little mini stories which are quite inspiring mostly. It's technically a 'business' book, I guess. But the dude knows what's up!

THIS POST is EXACTLY what is going on in my life. I'm surrounded by people who are frustrating me to no end with their complaining. I'm certainly okay with complaining about something because you need to get it out, but complain and then DO something!

Don't talk to me about how you wish you could divorce your husband when you are a. cheating on him and b. it's been 2 years of your complaining. DO SOMETHING.

don't complain to me that you want to lose weight when you eat crappy food: mcdonalds for breakfast not here and there but everyday?? of course you're not going to lose anything when you are fueling your body with grease everyday.

don't complain to me about your job when you haven't done one thing to get a promotion or change careers.

I hate this "skating by" that people get into. Chelsea, I'm so so so so glad that you wrote this and you feel the same. love it.

the sad thing is when people get into these grooves, they lose friends and people stop caring because it's the same shit over and over again. Just gave up a friend 2 days ago over a similar issue after trying to help her for 2 years be happier and change her life. She'd rather complain and dwell on it and let years pass her by.

Sorry this was so long!!

Hi Chelsea, You said it all. And thank you for that. It's important to have your voice out there. Everyone can start doing more of what they love is my belief. Everyone can find something they like on their job and build on it. Everyone can begin to look at how they are colluding with the life they are complaining about. At 70, I wrote some of this down as some gentle guidance for those who are willing to accept an invitation to their own calling. For those interested, check out: Why Not Do What You Love or just add a .com and you've got the website. And, keep going with those illustrations!
