The Banshee.

If you've never looked at Matt Benyo's blog, now is a good time to do so. He took a picture of me from New York City and made me into a ZOMBIE. LOVE IT!

I was idly drawing when I drew this. I was trying to figure out what she was. At first I thought Skatha, but then I came up with the banshee. A banshee: "In Irish Mythology is a female spirit, usually believed to be an omen of death or a messenger from another world." I wanted this banshee to be mean and evil. Then I did some research and found out that the red poppy would make a great hair accessory because it's associated with death during WWI and WWII. I found out that the swirls in the hair meant death in some culture that I clearly didn't write down. I was going to add things like dripping blood and a clock, but I didn't want it to get cliche. I like the sketch. I enjoy the way it turned out, but I didn't really know what to do for the finish so I just messed around with the coloring and used two different backgrounds. I figured I needed to do SOMETHING Halloween related. Tis the season, right?

I love that you posted the original sketch and then what you did with it. It's like watching an artist in progress!!

The flower in her hair reminds me of those flowers Melissa was making during Cranbrook... lol
